How Long Do Braces Hurt?

Most people who get braces will experience some discomfort when the braces are first put on and when they are adjusted. This is normal and should dissipate within a few days. If you experience more than mild discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain medication to help ease the pain. Some people also find that ice packs can help to reduce inflammation and pain. In most cases, the discomfort from braces will go away within a day or two. However, if you continue to experience pain or if the pain worsens, you should contact your orthodontist.

What to Expect When Getting Braces

We get lots of questions about the process of getting braces. Here are some of the FAQs patients have.

How to get braces?

The process of getting braces usually begins with a consultation with an orthodontist, who will assess your teeth and determine whether braces are the best course of treatment. If so, the orthodontist will take X-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth in order to create a treatment plan. Once the treatment plan is finalized, the orthodontist will attach the to your teeth. The braces will then need to be adjusted on a regular basis in order to achieve the desired results. The entire process can take several months to a year or more, depending on the severity of the misalignment.

How long does it take to get braces?

The time it takes to get braces depends on a case-by-case evaluation by an experienced and expert orthodontist. Typically a braces installation appointment is about an hour. Contact our team to find out how long your specific case will take to install.

Who can get braces?

The short answer is anybody! From early treatment orthodontics at age seven to adult orthodontics long into life, it’s always a good time to get in to see the orthodontist for an evaluation.

Why should I get braces?

A straight smile can boost your confidence as well as improve your oral health. Orthodontics is crucial to jaw health, and gum health, and even can lower the risk of disease in other areas of the body. Not to mention, the difference in a smile before and after braces is astounding!
